Stained glass as an art form was clearly established by the eleventh century. It was used at this time to illustrate stories from the bible since the majority of people were illiterate.
The Arts and Crafts Movement and development of Art Nouveau during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s saw a revival of stained glass. Today glass continues to fascinate and delight people.
I have this fascination with glass. It is a demanding medium to work with, something transparent, flat and unyielding. Glass is a fragile structure that becomes stronger with each layer of foil and solder applied.
I delight in the reflections of the colour and soft shadow and the absolute transformation that occurs when pieces of glass are overlaid!
